Balanced Nutrition

How is ElementGold Plus+ Balanced?

A standard serve of ElementGold Plus+, which includes the addition of 15 mL of oil as a fat source, is considered nutritionally balanced. The nutrients are balanced by conforming to the Food for Special Medical Purposes (FSMP) part of the Australia and New Zealand Food Standards Code, including parts that make it suitable as the only food you would eat for a period (when used under the guidance of a medical professional).

FSMP

ElementGold Plus+ conforms to the Food for Special Medical Purposes (FSMP) part of the food standards code as it was originally formulated for the nutritional support of sufferers of Crohn's Disease, an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) but it also suitable for many situations where an elemental food is a suitable source of nutrition.

Sole Source of Nutrition

This is a section under Food for Special Medical Purposes (FSMP) for foods intended to be used as the only thing a person would eat (the sole source of nutrition) for a period. This allows ElementGold Plus+ to be suitable for gut rest diets such as those associated with Crohn's Disease and Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) where ElementGold Plus+ is the only food eaten typically for a period one to three weeks. Use in this way must be under the guidance of a medical professional but other uses still benefit from ElementGold Plus+ conforming to this part of the food standards code.

Protein

Protein and Elemental Foods

Elemental foods aim to provide all ingredients in the most broken down form possible. In the case of protein this would mean using only free-form amino acids. Although important, the elemental free-form amino acids do not provide enough of the body's protein requirements, particularly when trying to maintain weight. This is why ElementGold Plus+ and ElementGold Plus+ Vegan add whole protein to a base of elemental amino acids. ElementGold Plus+ adds a premium form of Whey Protein Isolate and in the case of ElementGold Plus+ Vegan protein derived from rice is used.

Whey Protein Isolate (WPI) and Milk

Whey is the liquid part of milk once the solids (curds) have been removed. The whey contains about 12% protein which we want to isolate from the lactose(milk sugar), minerals and fats . There are different ways to isolate the protein from milk whey and they have different levels of purity. The most common methods are:

  • Some Milk Powders are created by simply dehydrating the whey. This method is cheapest but will contain the lactose, minerals and some fats.
  • Whey Protein Concentrates attempt to remove more of the lactose, minerals and fats and will be around 70-80% protein.
  • Whey Protein Isolates (WPI) aim for at least 90% protein and are processed using various methods.
  • Whey Protein Isolate (WPI) extracted using the Ion-Exchange method have even higher protein and additionally avoid heat and pressure that can damage delicate protein chains.

ElementGold Plus+ uses Whey Protein Isolate extracted using the Ion-Exchange method and milk from New Zealand cows. It is rated at 92% protein and the Ion-Exchange process ensures high quality of the extracted proteins.

Contains Milk?

The ElementGold Plus+ ingredients listing contains the phrase "CONTAINS MILK" in compliance with Australia/New Zealand Food Standards Code. This is required because the proteins added were isolated from milk whey.

Sometimes people who are avoiding milk may still be able to consume ElementGold Plus+ without problems. If you are unsure, check with your healthcare professional but usually this is a combintion of tolerance amounts and the components of milk, some of which are not present in ElementGold or are present in much lower amounts than a glass of milk.

Protein
ElementGold Plus+ does not contain casein which is the protein found in the solids of milk. However, if you cannot tolerate the protein found in the whey of milk then ElementGold Plus+ may not be suitable for you and you should consider ElementGold Plus+ Vegan which uses a protein from rice.
Lactose is the sugar found in milk and is present in very low amounts in ElementGold Plus+. A 340mL serve contains only 0.1g of lactose, which is extremely low compared to the 15 to 17g typically found in the same amount of cows milk.

Rice Protein

The plant-based protein added to ElementGold Plus+ Vegan is derived from whole grain brown rice.

Protein is extracted from all layers of the whole grain rice (including bran, germ and endosperm). The extraction process uses low-heat to minimise denaturing of delicate proteins, is hexane-free and no other synthetic chemicals are used. The result is a high-quality plant-based protein comparable to whey protein isolate in terms of potential for building muscle.

Typically, the protein powder contains over 85% protein, the remainder includes small amounts of fats, carbohydrates, fibre, vitamins and minerals, all of which are accounted for in the ElementGold Plus+ Vegan nutrition tables.
