About FODMAPs

FODMAP is an acronym that stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols.

FODMAPs are a group of carbohydrates, or sugars, which are not fully digested or absorbed in the intestines and which are then fermented by bacteria when they reach the large intestine, causing gas to be produced. This gas can cause the symptoms of bloating and pain that some people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) experience after eating FODMAPs.

FODMAPs are found in many foods and it can be almost impossible to tell what and how much are in a certain food unless it is tested in a laboratory. Some examples of FODMAPs are fructose, lactose, xylitol and sorbitol.

ElementGold Plus+ Unsweetened Vanilla has been tested through the Monash University accreditation system and is a Monash University Low FODMAP certified™ food*. This means it has been tested in the Monash Laboratory and that one serving of ElementGold (4 scoops) contains under the threshold amount of FODMAPs determined by Monash to trigger IBS symptoms. In other words, people who suffer from IBS can be confident that this flavour is unlikely to trigger the symptoms of IBS.

Please note that adding other ingredients to a serve of ElementGold Plus+ Unsweetened Vanilla may mean it is no longer low FODMAP. A strict low FODMAP diet should only be commenced under the supervision of a healthcare professional.

* Monash University has only assessed ElementGold Plus+ Unsweetened Vanilla in terms of being a low FODMAP food.

Researchers at Monash University performed the original research to come up with the concept of FODMAPs and to establish the efficacy of a low FODMAP diet. Monash research showed IBS symptoms improve in 3 out of 4 people who follow a low FODMAP diet. Other research groups from all over the world have since shown similar results. Because of this, a low FODMAP diet is often recommended as the first treatment choice for people diagnosed with IBS.

The Monash FODMAP App is the largest FODMAP food database available and gives you easy access to recommendations about the foods and beverages you should eat (and avoid) at every meal.

You can find the Monash University Low FODMAP Certification symbol on foods and beverages. This certification means the product has been independently tested by the Monash University FODMAP laboratory and is found to suitable for low FODMAP diets. ElementGold Plus+ Unsweetened Vanilla has been certified and can be found on the Monash University FODMAP app.
